The other day I was dissatisfied with iMovie's default effects and transitions, so I went searching for free ones. Maybe this will save some of you a few minutes of Googling.

UPDATE!  (Sept 25/06) - I found a few more that look cool. Read on! 

Number One: Scott's iMovie Plugins

Effects: 

• 16:9 / 4:3 conversions
• Anonymous person hider
• Pixelizer
  
• Many colour adjustments
• Vignette borders
• Horizontal/vertical hold imitation
• Photoshop-like filters
• Ye Olde TV - colourizes and adds stripes
• Auto Saturation
• Blueprint & Lithograph

Number Two: BKMS Free Sampler

Transitions:

• Melt Away to Black
• Melt Through Black
• Pixelate Dissolve
• Soft Wipe 

Number Three:  Slick Sampler from Gee Three

Transitions: 

• Barn Door Open
• Burst
• Drip
• Heart Close/Open
• Radiator
• Sweep

Effects:

• Film Noise
• Solarize
• X-Ray 

Miscellaneous:

• Jerk - makes motion in a clip 'jerky'
  
• Emboss - does just that
• Balloons - put in speech balloons
• Snow Flakes - add artificial snow
• Gabriele Lip Service - night vision, security camera, sniper goggles, etc.
• Edge Detect - like the Photoshop filter
• Darken / Brighten - just like it says
• Turn Clip - rotate your movie in right angles
