Blender Collada models for Papervision3D - revisited

In this tutorial I will show you how to name your objects and materials and then manipulate them in Papervision3D. My previous tutorial about exporting Collada from Blender assumed you wanted to use a UV map for your model and didn't explain how to get it into Papervision3D and use it. Hopefully this one will fill in some missing information.

So let's say you already have some objects in Blender that need setting up. If you select an object (right-click) you can give it a name in the Links and Pipeline panel:

If you don't already have a material linked to the object you need to click the Add New button shown above. Otherwise you should see something like this:

Give the object and material a name and be sure to remember the exact spelling, because you will need these later when you are doing Actionscript code. Feel free to assign a unique material to every object. You can always reduce materials used when you're in Flash, but you can't add them as easily. You may also give the object a temporary colour to use while you are in Blender, knowing this will change later.

Once you've done this for all your objects, you need to UV unwrap the models even if you don't have a UV map. I don't know why, it just makes the models useable in Papervision:

  1. Go into UV face select mode. (version 2.4.6+ users just select Edit Mode – your menu is different)

  2. Where to find UV Face Select mode
  3. Click Face>unwrap UVs (version 2.4.6+ users click the Mesh menu and select "UV Unwrap")

  4. Click Unwrap(smart projections) and then click OK (using the defaults). (version 2.4.6+ users should be okay from here on)

If you still want to use UV images, see my previous article for complete instructions.

Now you can export! Select File>Export>COLLADA 1.4 and set your file path and options as below:

Now you are ready to take the model into Flash and Papervision3D. You can either:

  1. Use the Papervison3D component, or
  2. Use plain code
